    Batik

Thorn Prikker’s friend, the poet Henry Borel who lived in China, sent the artist the necessary tools and materials for his experiments with the batik technique. Thorn Prikker’s wife Lena Spree offered him practical assistance. He applied the motifs to a piece of silk or cotton with wax. When the fabric was placed in a dye bath, the waxed areas remained uncoloured. From 1898 his designs were produced by Agathe Wegerif and others at the batik studio of the Arts and Crafts firm in The Hague and sold as cushion covers or curtains.

Johan Thorn Prikker: Walldecoration at Scheveningen (NL)

Subtitles will follow shortly.

After 1895 Johan Thorn Prikker focused increasingly on the applied arts, as he believed that he would be able to reach a larger audience. Together with the architect Chris Wegerif, Thorn Prikker established a progressive gallery in The Hague called Arts and Crafts. In addition to paintings and sculptures by internationally renowned artists and furniture by Henry van de Velde, the gallery sold batiks, lamps and furniture by Johan Thorn Prikker made in the gallery’s own workshops. In 1900 Thorn Prikker was employed by the interior design company Binnenhuis Die Haghe. Together with the sculptor Johan Altorf, he designed the interior of Huis de Zeemeeuw (The Seagull) in Scheveningen, designed by Henry van de Velde.
