On 23 June 1634, Rembrandt married Saskia van Uylenburgh. Together they had four children; Titus was the only one to remain alive. When Saskia van Uylenburgh died in 1642, Geertje Dircx and then Hendrickje Stoffels came and lived with the family as servant. The latter later become Rembrandts lover and in 1654, their daughter Cornelia was born. In 1656, Rembrandt was declared bankrupt, partly due to his passion for collecting art, his far too expensive house and the few assignments he received at the time. In order to provide an income for the family, Titus and Hendrickje Stoffels started an art company and employed Rembrandt. In this way, he could continue to paint without being bothered by creditors.

When an inventory was taken of Rembrandt’s possessions at the time of his bankruptcy, it turned out that the painter also had three paintings in his house that had been made by his son Titus. Rembrandt had many pupils, such as Carel Fabritius, Gerard Dou, Ferdinand Bol and Govert Flinck. The painter would regularly sign his name to works that had been painted by his pupils. Even today, there is still some uncertainly about the authenticity of many paintings. There is a painting in Museum Boijmans van Beuningen from the Rembrandt school that people have sometimes thought could have been painted by Titus.

Curator’s choice: Jeroen Giltaij selects Rembrandt's Titus

Rembrandt’s portrait of his son Titus from 1655 is a special favourite of Jeroen Giltaij, curator of the old masters. Although the collection of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen has several portraits by Rembrandt, such as that of the Amsterdam lady Aletta Adriaensdochter (1639), he thinks that nothing compares to the portrait of Titus. Jeroen Giltaij explains what makes this painting so special.
