Arletty (15 mei 1898 - 24 juli 1992) was a French actrice, singer and model.

Her best and most famous role was that of Garance in Marcel Carnés' film Les Enfants du Paradis.

She was arrested in 1945 because she had had a relationship with an officer of the German Luftwaffe during the German occupation of France. At her arrest she allegedly shouted: 'My heart is French but my ass is international!' ("Mon coeur est français, mais mon cul est international!").

    Modjesko

Modjesko was a Romanian immigrant who became famous in Paris as a soprano singer. The painting Van Dongen made dates from 1907 and shows the elegantly clad performer in profile, lipsticked mouth agape in song. Only the use of the word "chanteur" instead of "chanteuse" in the French title would lead the viewer to believe that the soprano is in fact a transvestite.

    Comtesse de Noailles

Anna de Noailles (1876-1933) wrote three novels, an autobiography, and many collections of poetry. She was the toast of Parisian high society and had friendly relations with the intellectual, literary and artistic elite of the day.

So popular was Anna de Noailles that various notable artists of the day painted her portrait, including Antonio de la Gandara, Kees van Dongen, Jacques Émile Blanche.

Opening exhibition Kees van Dongen in 1967

Moving images of artists from the generation of painter Kees van Dongen (1877-1968) are rare. This fragment from the Polygoon Journaal [Newsreel] contains images of Van Dongen during the opening of an exhibition in 1937. He speaks, as he describes it himself, with a whisky voice, thanks to an excessive use of Dutch coffee.

This Polygoon Journaal is about the opening of a retrospective exhibition of Kees van Dongen in Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in 1967. Van Dongen was a familiar face in the museum. Works by him had been purchased before the Second World War.

The exhibition in 1967 was followed by an exhibition in 1990. A record number of 436,938 visitors were welcomed by the museum that year.

In 2010, the third major exhibition of Kees van Dongen will be organised in Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum; then the central theme will be how he became a successful painter.
