    Breitner

George Breitner (1857-1923) was a friend and colleague of Isaac Israëls. Both lived in Amsterdam in the late 1880s. They were a member of the Amsterdam Impressionists and acquainted with the literary group ‘De Tachtigers’ (The Movement of 1880). Their subjects were based on real life, especially on urban life and the people in Amsterdam.

Like many artists, Breitner used photography as tool for his painting. However, his pictures are more than that. They are a fascinating portrait of the city Amsterdam. That is why much attention is paid nowadays to Breitner as photographer. His collection of photographs is largely kept in the Amsterdam City Archives.

  4. Jozef Israëls and Romanticism

    Jozef Israëls and Romanticism

The movement Romanticism, of which subjectivity and fantasy are keywords, came into being at the end of the 18th century. An important participant is J. Turner and his depiction of wild landscapes.
The Hague School and Impressionism reacted against the sentimentalism of Romanticism and took real life as starting point. Nevertheless, Jozef Israëls, who was educated in the Romantic tradition, never left his roots. His typical The Hague School portraits of fishermen that arouse emotions, betray his background.

The Exhibition ‘Sketches of Jozef and Isaac Israëls’

In 1961, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen organized the exhibition ‘Sketches of Jozef and Isaac Israëls’, shown in this fragment of the newsreel.

Father and son Jozef and Isaac Israëls are both Dutch artists, born in the 19th century. Jozef Israëls was a member of The Hague School, a group of artists living in The Hague that painted realistic landscapes and working men. Jozef Israëls depicted especially the life of fishermen.
His son was his apprentice, until 1886 when Isaac Israëls started to live his own life in Amsterdam. He became a member of the Amsterdam Impressionists. Isaac Israëls depicted the exciting urban life and his style was more loosened and colorful compared to his father.

The exhibition showed sketches of father and son and offered an interesting comparison between their different oeuvre.
