    Mosaics

Thorn Prikker experimented with designing mosaics as early as 1914. This came about because of the fusion of Gottfried Heinersdorff’s firm, with who he made stained glass, and the mosaic firm Puhl & Wagner in Berlin. The mosaic stones employed here are in fact small pieces of coloured glass. The basic principle of mosaic design is similar to that of pattern for a weaving or a Pointillist painting: the motif is made up of individual points of colour. In his designs the numbers refer to the colours of the glass. Like stained-glass windows, monumental mosaics usually have a direct relationship to architecture.

Johan Thorn Prikker: Mosaic and stained-glass window in Düsseldorf

In 1923 Johan Thorn Prikker returned to the Rhineland. He became a teacher at the art school in Düsseldorf. Here he was able to establish his own glass workshop and therefore exercise greater control over each step of the production process. This position brought him prestigious commissions, including stained-glass windows and mosaics for the GeSoLei exhibition pavilion in Düsseldorf. Here his spectacular designs were linked emphatically to the architecture and therefore also, in his words, ‘directly with life’.
