  7. The film loop

    The film loop

Characteristic for Van Warmerdam’s films in the use of the ‘loop’: an endless repetition of a film in which the beginning and the end fit seamlessly together. The movement comes as it were to to a standstill in these loops. The looped films often seem simple recordings, but they are almost always carefully constructed by Marijke van Warmerdam herself. This is also true of this hand stand from 1992.

  8. Documentary ‘Close by in the distance’

Marijke van Warmerdam

Marijke van Warmerdam’s view of the world is light - a certain sense of humour cannot be denied - but also surprising and refreshing. She shows us the world from an unexpected angle. Film maker Rudolf Evenhuis asked four people in Marijke van Warmerdam’s professional circle to reflect on her work. While Marijke van Warmerdam is preoccupied with parrots and cameras, curator Jan Debbaut explains that she ‘knocks’ the stories out of her work, artist Marlene Dumas talks about ‘catching airplanes’ and gallery owner Kees van Gelder suggests that ‘scratching things bare’ in her work is ‘a bit Dutch’. Curator Lynne Cooke adds that to talk about her work is ‘almost unneccesary’.
