The mosaic stained-glass technique dates from the early Middle Ages. The image is made up of small pieces of coloured glass held together with lead strips. Since the Renaissance the tableaux have become more detailed through the use of painted glass. Around 1910 Johan Thorn Prikker and Gottfried breathed new life into the medieval techniques. Their technique based solely upon form and colour – avoiding painted glass – led to a greater abstraction of their motifs. This mirrored developments in painting in which pure colours and simple forms played an increasingly independent role.

Johan Thorn Prikker: Stained-glass windows in Cologne (NL)

In 1926 Thorn Prikker moved to Cologne. He became professor at the Kölner Werkschulen, where he was again given his own studio. He devoted the final phase of his career exclusively to making monumental works, often in collaboration with important architects. Despite his unorthodox views about faith, he received numerous commissions from the Catholic Church. In 1930 he was asked to design all fifty-one windows for the Church of St George in Cologne. In this project he brought together his knowledge of Romanesque architecture, the medieval mysticism of light and modern views on the liturgy.
