Gabriël Lester

Gabriël Lester (Amsterdam, 1972) is visual artist and film director. He works in a film-like manner with elements such as light, music and scenery. Sensual experience of his audience and themes such as determining fate, the power of imagination, expectation and magical thinking are at the centre of his art. Lester has exhibited previously in Sao Paolo, London, Stockholm and Istanbul.

Suspension of Disbelief

Suspension of Disbelief is a term from literature. It is also often applied in film. It is accepting something that falls outside reality as ‘true’ or ‘real’. With Suspension of Disbelief, your imagination wins over reality. Lester mentions Superman as an example. Because you want to go along with the story, you believe that Superman can fly, even though you know that in reality this cannot happen.

Gabriël Lester

Artist Gabriël Lester explains, in advance of his exhibition at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the most important themes in his art. In his installations and films, Lester plays with the power of imagination and caprices of fate. He explains, filmed among his work at the art fair Art Rotterdam, what ‘Suspension of Disbelief’ means.
