  3. Friso Lammertse and Annetje Boersma

Friso Lammertse is curator of Old Paintings at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. His research on the two paintings of 'Saint Jerome with an Angel' resulted in a publication, that will be brought out as a part of the Boijmans Studies series: Friso Lammertse, Carina Fryklund, Annetje Boersma, with contributions by Anne-Lies van Loon and Lena Dahlén Rotterdam, 'Copy or masterpiece? Anthony van Dyck's two versions of St. Jerome with an angel', (Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen) 2009

Annetje Boersma is a conservator. She restored the Rotterdam version of the 'Saint Jerome with an angel'.

  4. Röntgen photography

On the monitor Lena Dahlén shows a röntgen photo. Röntgen technology gives the art historian insight in the drawings or paintings under the painting surface. This is how art historians can see the changes artists made during the painting process.

  5. Magnifying glasses

Friso Lammertse is wearing special glasses, that functions as a magnifier.

  6. Tracings

    Tracings

A tracing can superimpose two images digitally. The technique of tracings is applied to compare the compositions of paintings. 17th- century painters used all kinds of techniques to literally copy a composition onto a new canvas, resulting into two completely similar compositions. In the video you see how is being investigated if this is the case here as well.

  7. Alejandro Vergara

    Alejandro Vergara

Alejandro Vergara is curator of Flemish and Dutch painting in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. He came to Stockholm especially for the research-opportunity: it doesn’t happen that often that the two paintings are presented next to each other.

Carina Fryklund is curator of old painting in the Nationalmuseum of Stockholm. She is also co-writer of the publication about the two Van Dyck paintings.

    Extra arm?

On the röntgen picture at the right you can see a vague divergent form. This must be an earlier painting, under the top layers of paint of the Rotterdam painting. Röntgen technology gives the art historian insight in the drawings or paintings under the painting surface. This is how art historians can see the changes artists made during the painting process.

From Stockholm with Love

Two 17th-century paintings, rontgen photography, paint samples and five top specialists in the area of 17th century painting with sparkling eyes. For two days Catrien Schreuder eye-witnessed an art historical research project on two paintings by Anthony van Dyck. She travelled to Stockholm, where the works were both placed in the restoration studio of the Nationalmuseum.

Catrien Schreuder, senior of education and interpretation, developed a concept for a multimedia presentation of this research project. The exhibition can be visited from 5 December 2009 til 14 February 2010. Catrien Schreuder made a video impression of her trip to Stockholm.
