    Anne Wenzel

    Anne Wenzel

Anne Wenzel (1972, Schüttorf Germany) studied at the AKI, Academy of Art and Design in Enschede and has lived and worked for many years in Rotterdam. Wenzel has long been fascinated by the universal language of (war) monuments and commemorative sites. She has a particular fondness for monuments whose grandeur has been ravaged by time. The resulting contrast plays a central role in her work. Her gloomy ceramic sculptures and installations explore the beauty hidden in menace, devastation, disasters and decay. In this way she positioned herself as heir to the 18th-century Romantic painters, who found the sublime in the attraction of and threat from nature. Museum Boijmans van Beuningen regularly invites contemporary artists to offer an intervention, a presentation in which they reflect on the collection or the museum building. This was the case with Anne Wenzel. Her Intervention # 13 - Requiem or Heroism is compiled by the Curator of the City Collection of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen.

  3. Wieki Somers’s cloakroom

Wieki Somers’s cloakroom is situated in the entrance area of the museum, which can be visited without an entrance ticket. In 2008 the ad hoc designers collective, Haunting Dogs Full of Grace, was invited to redesign several public services in this part of the building. Studio Wieki Somers was part of this collective.

    Paulien Oltheten

Paulien Oltheten (Nijmegen, 1982) is an artist and a photographer. Her work concentrates on the way people use public space; how we move, sit, lounge and particularly how we relate to other people. The video It's great when two legs walk as one was made in 2009 as part of the Portscapes project and can be seen at Museum Boijmans van Beuningen from 5 February 2010. The book Theory of the street, with texts by Hans Aarsman and Tijs Goldschmidt, bundles 100 photographs, film clips and drawings by Oltheten.

  6. Fire Boundary Rotterdam

    Fire Boundary Rotterdam

Rotterdam has various monuments in memorial of the Second World War. The most famous is the sculpture by the Russian sculptor Ossip Zadkine called The Destroyed City, now in the Martime Museum located on the Leuvenhaven. A completely new type of monument is the documentary website about the German bombing raid lasting less then a quarter of an hour that destroyed the centre of Rotterdamon 14 May 1940. The city burns for days. Later the periphery of the bombardment is coined: Fire Boundary. This is now the name given to the documentary site containing collected documents and witness statements about the fatal day and its consequences.

  7. Carsten Höller’s Art

The artist Carsten Höller (1961, Brussels) has undertaken biological research into the way plants and insects communicate with each other, has organised festivals of Congolese music and has investigated the hallucinatory properties of mushrooms. His work also takes a variety of forms: sculpture, painting, video and installation. Because Höller does not master all the disciplines, he regularly involves other artists and studios to execute the work for him. Many of his works confuse the senses. The artist tries to disturb the spectator’s equilibrium by using flickering light and subtly moving spaces. Carsten Höller exhibited in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (6 February to 25 April 2010).

  8. The Supper at Emmaus

    The Supper at Emmaus

The Bible story of the supper at Emmaus (Luke 24, 13-35) is read after Easter, commemorating the resurrection of Christ and his appearance to two disciples. Two of Christ’s disciples are on their way to Emmaus, a village in Judea, not far from Jerusalem. They are accompanied by an unknown man. Only when the figure breaks bread at supper do the disciples recognise him as Jesus Christ and know that he has risen from the dead. The two disciples are always portrayed as men, although this is not explicitly stated in the Bible. Both the painting by Van Meegeren and the painting of the same subject by Caravaggio (1571-1610) show two male disciples.

  9. Han van Meegeren: master forger

    Han van Meegeren: master forger

In 1937, the director of Museum Boymans, Dirk Hannema (1895-1984) purchased the painting The Supper at Emmaus for an amount that today would run into several million. Acclaimed as the missing link in the oeuvre of world-famous artist Vermeer (1632-1675), the work was given pride of place in the museum. In 1945, it was revealed that the work had been made by the master forger Han van Meegeren (1889-1947). Museum Boijmans van Beuningen is holding an exhibition from 12 May to 22 August 2010, featuring the fake Vermeers of Van Meegeren.

Heel positief om op deze wijze kennis te maken met kunst. Jammer dat er niet meerdere reacties zijn. Ondanks dit zou het heel fijn zijn dat op deze manier kunst onder de aandacht kan worden grbracht.

I enjoy watching features on this website very much. This morning I was unable to access without initiating a user name and password. Previously, I had direct access to this website. It was difficult, since I speak English. Though this offers the chance to learn a new language, I miss the subtitles and English text. Can anyone answer my email and tell me what happened. ED
