The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen repositories

The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen repositories have been inadequate for years. They often flood when it rains and they are damp. This poses a serious threat to the safety of the museum’s art collection, most of which is owned by Rotterdam City Council, but also includes loans from third parties. The start of renovation works on a number of repositories prompted the Inside Out exhibition, since the works of art had to be temporarily accommodated somewhere else.

The Collection and Research Sector is responsible for conserving and administering the works and objects in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. This includes looking after and supervising loans. The restoration workshop specializes primarily in the restoration of works on paper. The library is part of the sector and also operates as an information centre for visitors.

Kunsthal

The Kunsthal Rotterdam stages some 25 exhibitions a year. The Kunsthal presents culture in the widest sense of the word: old art, new art, design, photography—from elitist to popular. The Kunsthal often experiments with themes which in many cases generate the initial idea for an exhibition. This approach has produced an exciting and varied exhibition repertoire highlighting Impressionism, lingerie, Leonardo da Vinci, Blackfoot Indians, Jewels of the Orient and Pop Art. More than 3,300 square metres of exhibition space are available in Rotterdam architect Rem Koolhaas’s striking building—a work of art in its own right—making a visit to the Kunsthal well worth while.

Inside Out, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen on show in Kunsthal Rotterdam

In total 9,998 paintings and objects from the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen repositories crossed Rotterdam’s Museumpark to go on show in the Kunsthal. Head of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen’s Collection and Research Sector Jonieke van Es talks about this spectacular move, undertaken so that much-needed maintenance work can be done on the antiquated repositories. Jannet de Goede, the Kunsthal’s exhibition maker, talks about the challenge of presenting so many art objects in one of the Kunsthal’s galleries. The Inside Out Exhibition ran from 6 February 2010 - 24 May 2010.
