    Your sun machine, 1997

In 1997, Olafur Eliasson made Your sun machine for an exhibition in the Marc Foxx Galery in Los Angeles. With limited means - a round hole in the roof - Eliasson achieved a magnificent effect. As the day progressed, the beam of sunlight moved through the room, and suddenly it became completely clear that both the earth and ourselves are in constant movement.

    Miracles of nature?

The work of Olafur Eliasson (1967, Copenhagen), who from 1989 to 1995 studied at the Royal Art Academy of Copenhagen, is about observing and experiencing. He places natural phenomenon, such as rainbows and mist, in a staged setting. For this, science and technique are important, but the artist is primarily interested in the human aspects. His installations offer the public an intense viewing experience. Experiencing is not about passive viewing, but actively participating and consciously recording things with the senses. That becomes easier if you provide the viewer with an insight into how looking works: ‘seeing yourself sensing’ is how Eliasson refers to this. By making the technical foundations of his installations visible, the magic disappears - just like an illusionist who explains, step by step, his conjuring trick.

In 2005, Olafur Eliasson worked with between 20 and 25 people; today his team has grown to around 30. On the artist’s website, the visitor is given a glimpse behind the scenes of the industrious work place of Olafur Eliasson and his team in Berlin.

Notion motion on view in the museum again!

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents the monumental installation Notion motion (2005) by the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson (1967, Copenhagen). Notion motion was developed specially for Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and was donated to the museum in 2005 by H+F Patronage, founded by the writer and collector, Han Nefkens. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen exhibited the installation Notion motion for the first time in 2005 and got enthusiastic responses from the public and press. This summer provides another opportunity to see this monumental installation in the museum’s large exhibition spaces. Over the past fifteen years Eliasson has built up an impressive body of work consisting of rainbows, sunsets, waterfalls, aromatic walls, mist, beams of light and periscopes. He is considered one of the most important artists of his generation. This film is a shortened version of the documentary Olafur Eliasson - Notion motion by Jan Schmidt-Garre that appeared in 2005. In this film, specially produced for Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, the creation process of the art-work is followed stage by stage. The documentary is on sale in the Museum Shop.
