Their first perfume, Flowerbomb, was a great success. In September 2009 L’Oréal Produits de Luxe International has unveiled a new feminine fragrance from avant-garde design duo Viktor & Rolf, called Eau Mega. As its name suggests, the scent is “mega glamorous, chic and sophisticated”, according to the brand.

    Viktor & Rolf

Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren both are born in 1969. They started to collaborate in 1992, after their graduation at ArtEZ, Institute of the Arts in Arnhem, the Netherlands. In 15 years the influential couple has conquered the world of fashion and art. Their work shows a characteristic mixture of distanced irony and surreal beauty.

In January 1998, Viktor & Rolf had their first haute couture collection, followed by a ready-to-wear collection two months later. They became a famous duo in the international fashion world very quickly. Flowerbomb, a worldwide popular perfume, and the collection the couple designed in 2006 for Hennes & Mauritz Fashion Stores, made the name Viktor & Rolf known with a broad audience.

In August 2009 the designer couple made its appearance at Zomergasten, a prestigious Dutch television program. Viktor & Rolf spoke for more than 3 hours about how films and television programmes have influenced their work and life.

Viktor & Rolf have a ingenuous website, built as a house, on which you can see the latest fashion shows.

  4. Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin

Inez van Lamsweerde (1963) and Vinoodh Matadin (1961) both studied at the fashion department of the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Van Lamsweerde specialized in fashion photography; Matadin in design and styling. They became partners, professionally as well as privately. In 1992, Van Lamsweerde got a scholarship for PS1 in New York. This was the beginning of a successful international career. Van Lamsweerde and Matadin like to work in the area where fashion, photography and art overlap and blur.

Curator José Teunissen about Dutch fashion designers Viktor & Rolf and their role in the world of fashion and art

They may look like classical fashion designers – the House of Viktor & Rolf isn’t a traditional house of couture at all. On the contrary, the inseparable couple designs clothes that refer mockingly to the principles of the fashion industry. The clothes are gorgeous and the mockery is serious.

For The Art of Fashion, Viktor & Rolf created a perfume ‘with-a-scent’. They presented their new perfume in a mysterious room that is accessible only through a dark corridor. José Teunissen, who knows the couple since their student years, takes an effort to describe what you will experience entering the installation at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and explains the relationship of this work with the rest of the oeuvre.

This video is part of the The Art of Fashion exhibition, on view until January 10th 2010 at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
